For Immediate Release:
November 24, 2019
Dear Church Leaders:
Greetings! I am Flint’s First Poet Laureate, and I have something exciting to share! But first, I have a
question: What happens when the beauty of poetry is combined with stunning visual art? Answer:
hearts are stirred, imagination expands, and possibilities are endless.
I understand that your church has been doing extraordinary work in the areas of literacy, and the
arts, and I thank you for this most important contribution to our community! The Flint Institute of
Arts (FIA) and I want to recognize your efforts. You and your church membership are invited to my
poetry reading at the Flint Institute of Arts. Selections will be from my newly released book,
Bleeding Fire Tap the Eternal Spring of Regenerative Light (Broadside Lotus Press and Health
Collectors LLC) which is described as an odyssey in African American History and culture. In
addition, I will craft to poems which respond to the artwork in the exhibit.
This event, on Sunday, January 26, 2020 at 1:30 pm, is part of the Community Gala weekend, a
celebration of esteemed African American artists in the FIA’s Collection. During this afternoon of
poetry and art, you will receive a certificate of recognition. Attendees will have an opportunity to
visit the Community exhibition with myself and the FIA curatorial staff, have photos taken, and talk
with media about your great work.
We expect a robust turn out and we want your congregation to be represented well. The more the
merrier, and, of course, this event is free and open to all. I will be available to talk with guests and
autograph books. Again, the FIA welcomes you to a glorious afternoon of art and culture.
Sincerely,
Semaj Brown
